The Buying Guide to Purchasing Lumbers for Your DIY Projects
To All Our Valued Customers, Over the past few years, the Covid 19 Pandemic has forced us to adapt and change the way we do things on a day-to-day basis. Florida Lumber is no exception. To make sure that we remain strong and competitive in the market for the years to come, Florida Lumber has had to adjust and change our vision for the future. In the last 2 years, we have stopped selling Sheetrock and drywall products, roofing felt and roofing materials, and have even closed on Saturdays.
Over the last few months, we have been transitioning our way out of the door supply business so on August 31, 2022, our door shop will stop assembling doors. We will continue liquidating our doors from inventory until we are out of material.
Some customers have asked if we are closing or even moving locations. To set the story straight, we are not closing or selling the business and we are not moving. These changes are all part of our new vision and path to continue serving South Florida and increasing our footprint in the construction supply industry.
Our focus is going to be on Lumber, Construction Materials, Rebar Fabrication and Rebar Accessories. As we have liquidated some of the items that we don’t sell anymore we have created more space to buy a larger volume of our core items and pass on the savings to our customers.
In the next year you will start seeing changes that will help improve our ability to serve you, our customers. We appreciate your business and your patience as Florida Lumber’s new vision becomes reality.

Lumber is essential to the construction of patio covers, decks or useful garden boxes. You cannot start these projects without purchasing the lumber. The durability of these projects depends upon the lumbers’ quality, making it especially important to choose the right type. Being aware of some important factors can help you purchase the ideal lumber for your home projects.
Size Measurement
It is not enough to have just an approximate idea about the lumbers’ overall size when working on your DIY home project; rather, you need to determine exact dimensions. It isn’t prudent to rush to a local lumber distributor without these measurements. You need to measure the dimensions of the structure or the base object with a tape. These numbers will help ensure you make the right purchase. A rough estimation is sufficient during purchase, as you can alter the size of the lumber during construction.
Target Identification
It is important to determine the area of construction before purchasing lumbers for the DIY project.
- The proper identification of the area allows you to evaluate the privacy and shading options. It also prohibits you from violating the guidelines of property law.
- You can also measure the size of the overall space after correctly identifying the targeted area. This measurement helps you determine the number or size of the lumbers.
- The area identification allows you to gauge the effects of atmospheric elements on the wood. This information helps you choose the perfect lumber based on the quality of different woods.
Budget Evaluation
It is essential to set a budget before purchasing the right lumber material for your DIY project.
- The cost of lumber depends upon the style, type and age of woods. A properly assessed budget helps you select the perfect building material based on the cost of these features.
- It allows the lumber distributor to pick the material befitting your project and your budget.
Thorough Knowledge
You need to learn about the types and qualities of various woods before making any purchase. You also need to consider the aesthetics of the finished project during the selection. Furthermore, it’s also important to evaluate the type of woodwork before making any purchase. For example, some woods can handle hammering/grooving/drilling better than others. The process of selection and purchase becomes effortless with this information in your possession.
Limit Assessment
It is essential to impartially evaluate your craftsmanship before starting the envisioned DIY project.
- It may be possible for you to build exquisite products with only a cursory knowledge of carpentry. You may only need the assistance of proper equipment and building material.
- Many wooden products and designs require the excellence of trained builders or carpenters. These projects may overwhelm you, leading you to potentially abandon the project halfway through. Therefore, it is essential to assess your limitations ahead of starting a project.
Sketching Result
It is cost-effective to prepare a sketch of the envisioned project before purchasing the lumber.
- The lumber distributor can determine your exact needs based on sketched designs. A rudimentary sketch can accurately illustrate your lumber requirements to the distributor.
- The distributor’s professional advice saves you from making any unnecessary or inadequate purchases. In other words, the sketch prevents you from wasting your money through trial-and-error.
Maintaining Coherence
You may have plans to build a wooden product for your home’s interior. In this scenario, it is essential to match the new product’s type to the features of existing home products.
- You may take a sample of existing furniture or decorative items to the lumber distributor. The distributor may use this sample to identify the properly matching lumber. He/she may even suggest a similar wood/stain in the absence of an exact match.
Determining Needs
It is essential to determine your material needs before making any purchase from the local distributor. This assessment helps you guard against wasting your money and energy on the carriage.
- It is impossible to transport a large amount of lumber to your house without a proper vehicle.
- The accurate assessment of your material needs helps you to in turn determine how large of a transporting vehicle you will need. You can confirm the correct size of SUV’s space or truck’s bed based on this assessment.
- The pre-evaluation of your needs allows you to predict the number of trips to and from the distributor that will be required. It is prudent to let the distributor transport the lumbers during larger projects.
Lumber suppliers can offer a variety of hardwood options in comparison to local retailers. Hence, it is ideal to purchase timbers from local distributors during your home projects. The above-mentioned tips allow you to flawlessly determine the type and quality of the lumber, and they even reduce your expense through the exclusion of erroneous trials.
